Dulegaya: A little about this magical language

Updated: Apr 9

Many Indigenous languages reflect the values, beliefs, and perspectives of their speakers, and the Guna culture is no exception. Dule, which means people, is how they refer to themselves, and their language, Dulegaya, translates to people-mouth.

This language is integral to their cultural identity, encapsulating their worldview and traditions. More than just a means of communication—it is the foundation of how they see, understand, and interact with the world.

Guna culture is oral-based, with many traditions, myths, and historical accounts passed down through storytelling in Dulegaya. The Sailas (Guna spiritual and political leaders) play a crucial role in preserving the language, often singing or chanting important stories and wisdom in a poetic, rhythmic form.

As well as preserving the language, this culture is all about preserving their environment. We get to experience the magic that this place has to offer thanks to them. The natural beauty, the beaches, the paradise we see and have the privilege of experiencing on our visits. It is the Guna culture that makes this place what it is. It is all thanks to their beliefs and their way of relating to the environment that has shaped this place to what it is today.

By transitioning from I Travel By Boat, to Ulu, Estefania is paying homage to the deep cultural and linguistic traditions of the Guna. The ulu (boat) is not just a means of transportation, but a symbol of Guna resilience, connection to nature, and ancestral wisdom. The decision to transition from "I Travel By Boat" to "Ulu" reflects a shift toward authenticity and cultural respect, aligning the brand with the true spirit of Guna Yala. This name change is the root of our vision. Our aim is to align and shape the brand with that worldview for the future of this company, wherever we are.

As well as paying respect to their culture, we also want to share this with our visitors and give them the opportunity to experience this beautiful culture and their traditions to take back with them to wherever they come from. The intention behind what we do serves as a way of showing our gratitude to the culture, for welcoming us to their home and share their worldview with us.
